Chatham County wind and tropical storms, 2010–2025
What sixteen years of NOAA storm reports say about wind, tropical storms and hail in Chatham County, and what that means for a Savannah roof.
The short version
For Savannah roofs the steady threat is ordinary thunderstorm wind, not just hurricanes. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 390 thunderstorm-wind reports in Chatham County on 138 separate days from 2010 through 2025, with reports in every one of those years. 146 of them noted property damage.
Tropical systems are less frequent but bigger. Tropical storm, tropical depression or hurricane entries cover Chatham County on 15 days in 10 of the 16 years.
Thunderstorm wind, month by month
June has the most reports (100), followed by July (77), April (70) and August (64). Reports most often begin in the afternoon and evening. The busiest years were 2015 (57 reports), 2011 (44) and 2019 (35).
Most gusts in the record were below 58 mph (353 of 390), but 29 were 58 to 69 mph and 8 were 70 mph or more. The strongest measured gust was 79 mph near Garden City on April 25, 2015, and an estimated 78 mph gust was logged near Vernonburg on February 24, 2012.
Tropical storm days
The days on record cluster in late summer and fall: five in September, three in October, two in August, plus June (three), July (one) and May (one). The years with entries were 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
The only hurricane entries for the county in this period are October 7 and 8, 2016, during Hurricane Matthew. The database also lists 36 coastal flood entries, 16 of them in 2015.
Hail and tornadoes are smaller risks here
Hail is reported less often than inland. There were 82 hail reports on 35 days, the largest 2 inches (near Fort Screven on March 27, 2011), and 30 of the 82 came in 2011 alone. Nine tornado reports appear between 2015 and 2019, rated EF2 or lower.
What to do with this
- Have the roof checked before June, ahead of the peak thunderstorm months and hurricane season.
- After a strong wind event, look from the ground for lifted or missing shingles, bent flashing and debris in gutters, and take dated photos.
- Ask any roofer how their installation handles wind, for example the nailing pattern and edge details for the product they are quoting, and get it in writing.
- If your home is in the Downtown Historic District, plan for the review step before work is scheduled.
